Africa Day 2026: Advancing Economic Freedom Through UbuntuSusu

AAASME Secretariat | May 25, 2026

Each year on May 25, Africa pauses to reflect on a defining moment in its history; the founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), now known as the African Union. Sixty-three years on, Africa Day remains a powerful symbol of liberation, unity, and the collective determination of a continent committed to shaping its own destiny.

It is a day that reminds us not only of political independence, but of the ongoing journey toward economic freedom, integration, and inclusive growth, driven by Africa’s vast resources and resilient people.

A Renewed Commitment to Africa’s SME Ecosystem

At the All Africa Association for Small and Medium Enterprises (AAASME), Africa Day holds special significance. It is an opportunity to reaffirm our mission: advancing economic empowerment for Africa’s small and medium enterprises (SMEs), which remain the backbone of the continent’s economies.

Central to this vision is an indigenous, Afrocentric approach to financing; one that reflects Africa’s realities and leverages its strengths. This vision has found expression in the UbuntuSusu Continental SME Fund, a bold, homegrown solution designed by Africa, for Africa.

UbuntuSusu: A Movement Rooted in African Values

The UbuntuSusu model draws inspiration from traditional African savings systems, reimagined into a modern, scalable financial framework. As a voluntary contributory revolving fund, it represents a shift in paradigm; placing the power of economic transformation directly in the hands of African SMEs.

More than a funding mechanism, UbuntuSusu is a movement. It embodies the principle that collective effort, shared responsibility, and unity of purpose can unlock unprecedented opportunities for growth and prosperity across the continent.

This Africa Day, AAASME celebrates not only the idea, but the seven-year journey of consistent advocacy and engagement that has brought UbuntuSusu to this pivotal stage; across regional, continental, and global platforms.

Unveiling a Pan-African Leadership Structure

In furtherance of this vision, AAASME is proud to unveil a distinguished leadership structure to guide the UbuntuSusu initiative.

At the helm of affairs to achieve the mandate of the SME fund is Prof. P.L.O. Lumumba, and other Co-Chairs such as:

  • Dr. Ebiekure Jasper Eradiri — West Africa
  • Amb. Wallace Williams — Global Africa/Diaspora
  • Septi Bukula — Southern Africa
  • Amine Mohammed Boultabi — North Africa

They are joined by an accomplished group of leaders, including King Robinson Tanyi, Rose Mboya, Wendell Judson Addy, and Dr. Lucy Newman.

This structure reflects a strong commitment to corporate governance, inclusivity, and gender parity, supported by dedicated working committees to ensure seamless execution of the fund’s mandate.

Looking Ahead: Toward a $1.4 Billion Milestone

As preparations advance toward the formal launch of the $1.4 billion UbuntuSusu Fund in Q4 2026, AAASME remains focused on delivering a platform that ensures accessible, sustainable financing for SMEs across Africa.

This initiative represents more than capital; it is about restoring confidence, enabling enterprise, and building a future where African businesses thrive on their own terms.

The Spirit of Ubuntu

On this Africa Day, we are reminded that the journey of transformation is collective. The spirit of Ubuntu; “I am because we are”; continues to guide our path.

As Africa writes its next chapter, AAASME stands committed to empowering its entrepreneurs, strengthening its economies, and advancing a truly unified and prosperous continent.

Happy Africa Day.
